Astronomical League’s Observing Programs

The Observing Programs provide participants with goal oriented formalized direction for their astronomical observations. Certificates and pins are awarded to recognize the observer’s accomplishments and for demonstrating their observing skills with a variety of instruments. The various programs address the needs of beginning, intermediate and advanced observers. Many programs can be successfully completed in light-polluted backyards (e.g. Lunar, Double Star, Carbon Star lists) while others, like the Caldwell and Herschel 400 lists will require dark skies and larger sized telescopes. The equipment requirement for each program is clearly delineated with the beginner lists requiring just the naked eye or binoculars and the most advanced requiring large aperture telescopes.
